Following a downpour in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Tuesday, a secondary school student died and an unspecified number of people were reportedly swept away by the flood.

Flooding occurred in Ajaka, Express Junction, Olayinka, Ogunyanwo, and Isale-Ojumele areas of Sagamu.

The dead student, who was thought to attend Agbele Community High School, was believed to have fallen from a bike into a flood and drowned after being swept off his feet.

Motorcycles and other property valued in the millions of naira washed away, and some locals were hurt.

A resident in one of the affected areas, Banjo Adeoye, told newsmen: “We had something like this last year and it was more terrible; we cried out to the government, but we got no help. We don’t have a good drainage system on this axis.

“The flood has nowhere to pass, but into our houses. We thought the information from last year will help them plan well for this year, but here we are today, a boy lost his life. We don’t know how many okada or property we will have to look for.”

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, on Wednesday, confirmed the incident when he paid a visit to the affected areas for an on-the-spot assessment.

Oresanya stated that the redesign of the drainage master plan of the state has become imperative.

He, however, called on the Federal Government for assistance.
