Nura Abubakar, a 20-year-old trader in Jos, Plateau State, was sentenced to seven months in prison for stealing a Nokia phone.
According to the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Monday Dabit, the case was reported on March 17 at the “A” Division Police Station by one Anas Yusuf, the complainant.
Dabit claimed that Abubakar and his friends, who are now at large, started a fight and stole the complainant’s Nokia phone worth N4500.
The offence, he said, was punishable under the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos sentenced Abubakar after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Bokkos said the punishment would serve as deterrent to others who would want to indulge in the same act.
The convict was however given an option of fine of N5,000, and also ordered to pay a compensation of N4,000 to the complainant.
