On Tuesday, a fire completely destroyed a female students’ hotel on the University of Benin’s Ekehuan campus.
According to accounts, certain university assets and documentation were destroyed by the blaze.
However, no lives were lost in the event, which began at noon, according to a source who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria.
While one account claimed that the fire’s origin could not be determined, an other source claimed that one of the female students’ use of an electric cooker—commonly referred to as a “hot plate”—set it off.
According to the source, the attention of the fire service in the state was drawn to the incident on time and its men were on the ground to extinguish the fire.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, declined comment.
The state fire service is also yet to comment on the incident.
