Coaches at Chelsea have been sacked for failing to meet a specific goal over the years, and fans have been subjected to mockery from rival fans for their team’s poor performance.
According to a report in the UK publication Daily Mail, the suffering at the struggling Chelsea football club will no longer be limited to the coaches and fans.
According to the report, Chelsea players would have to take a pay cut if they failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which is currently the case.
The wage cut policy will primarily affect new players who have recently joined the club or are renewing their contracts under the club’s new ownership led by Todd Boehly.
According to reports, Chelsea inserted a clause in those players’ contracts requiring them to forfeit at least 30% of their wages to the club if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. This is in addition to other performance bonuses included in their contracts.
This means that Chelsea’s poor form will help the club save money that would have been spent on performance bonuses and paying the players’ full wages.
Chelsea has been so bad in the 2022-2023 season that they are currently 11th in the Premier League standings, 17 points behind the top four, with only 7 games remaining.
This means that even if they win all of their remaining games (which is unlikely given their recent form), they will not be able to qualify for the Champions League.
They had the best chance of qualifying if they won the UEFA Champions League this season. Unfortunately, Real Madrid eliminated them from the tournament after a 4-0 aggregate victory.
