West Ham have experienced a disappointing Premier League season and are in the midst of a relegation battle coming into the final weeks of the campaign. However, the UEFA Europa Conference League has been a very different story. They have performed incredibly well in each round, and it is unlikely anybody will be able to block their path to glory.
Historic European success is on the cards
European success this year would represent West Ham’s greatest season in decades. In 1965 they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup but they have enjoyed little success since. As far as London clubs go, they are far from the biggest and most successful. Arsenal and Chelsea have been more successful on the field, and are far more followed across the globe. However, it is the team that plays in claret and blue that has a serious chance of delivering continental glory this year.

The Hammers have been favourites to win the competition ever since Lazio suffered an upset at the hands of AZ Alkmaar. Lazio were expected to breeze past the Dutch side in the round of sixteen. However, their shortcomings could benefit David Moyes’ side massively. In bwin predictions, West Ham are offered at 9/4 to win the competition which makes them the clear favourites. bwin offers leading odds and predictions on a variety of football competitions each season. The East London side’s strongest competitors for the trophy are Fiorentina at 5/2.
Jarrod Bowen has been his typical self in Europe
While league form has been poor this year, some players have maintained a high level of performance in the Conference League. It is almost as if fighting for major honours is much more motivating than dealing with the pressure of potential relegation.
Jarrod Bowen was excellent in the league last season as he recorded 12 goals and 12 assists across 36 appearances. However this year his goal returns in the league have dropped off massively. He has performed well in Europe with four goals in seven European outings this term. In the league, Bowen has netted just five in 30 appearances so far. Bowen has been underperforming in the league this season, but in Europe, he has been his typical self.
Moyes could go from the verge of the sack to club legend
The Hammers have the quality necessary to be successful in their European endeavours. Generally, Moyes has not achieved huge things at West Ham but the Conference League offers the opportunity to change his legacy at the club. He was initially brought in to help the team avoid relegation in 2019, and almost four years later he finds himself faced with the same task yet again, but with the added chance of winning silverware for the club. His job is on the line, but he could still emerge as a legend.

Ultimately, West Ham could uniquely achieve a European honour alongside the disappointment of relegation this season. Bowen and Co. could deliver the trophy to the London Stadium. But should the relegation battle be prioritised? The financial repercussions of relegation would be huge and would far outweigh the benefits of winning the competition. The Hammers could certainly be set for a strange 2023/24 season, as the Championship could await them alongside a consecutive European tour.
