A motorcycle rider was on Monday killed around Al-Furqan Schools at Yelwa on the Bauchi-Dass road in Bauchi state.
He was hit and killed by a driver of a Volkswagen who was trying to evade arrest by officials of the zonal office (OVL SUV) of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bauchi State Sector Command.
Realizing the consequence of his action, which also saw another person sustaining injury, the driver fled, leaving his vehicle and its passengers behind.
Confirming the fatal accident to journalists on Tuesday, the FRSC Sector Commander, Yusuf Abdullahi, informed that the unfortunate accident occurred at about 3:40pm on Workers Day.
According to him, the sky blue coloured Volkswagen, with registration number TFB 427 RC, hit a Jincheng motorcycle and attributed the cause of the accident to traffic violation.
Abdullahi said nine persons, made up of six male adults and three female adults were involved in the crash, with a male adult dead while another male adult was injured.
Narrating what happened, the sector commander explained that the Volkswagen Vento was apprehended in front of the zonal office of the FRSC, while the driver was directed to drive in to the office, adding that the Road Safety official that arrested the driver sat in front of the vehicle, while seven passengers remained in the car.
“Some of passengers dropped to enable the arresting Marshal take a seat in front of the vehicle but the driver used the turn in front of Matrix Filling station junction and faced the incoming motorcycle from Yelwa direction, collided with it and killed the rider instantly, while the injured passenger was rushed to ATBUTH by the patrol team.
“The driver of the vehicle immediately ran away from the scene of the crash, while his vehicle was towed to the GRA Police Station. Efforts have been intensified to get him arrested so that he will face trial for the offence committed,” Abdullahi said.
He added that the remains of the deceased were conveyed by his relatives, while the injured was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for treatment.
