Five men have been remanded for allegedly killing an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mathew Aniaguru, at Emuren Junction in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The defendants, Shakiru Shittu, 48, Kadir Shonoki, 38, Shadiku Adeola, 43, TaofeekA Aluko, 38, and Adekunle Onasanya, 37, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.
The Chief Magistrate, Peter Nwaka, of the Sabo Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, who did not take the pleas of the defendants, ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
Nwaka adjourned the case to May 31 for mention.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Good Friday, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 6 at Emuren Junction, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Friday said that the defendants killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mathew Aniaguru, who was on official duty.
He said that the police officer, who was a Divisional Police Officer at Imota, received a distress call from one ASP Adamu Audu that they were being attacked by some gunmen at Emuren Junction.
Friday said that the defendants shot and killed the officer and took his AK-47 rifle with 10 rounds of ammunition.
He said that the police later raided and arrested the defendants.
The prosecutor then urged the court to give the police 30 days to carry out further investigation.
He said that some of the defendants had made “confessional statements” during interrogation.
