Police officers conducting routine stop-and-search operations in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State arrested 59 male suspects and 94 suspected female commercial sex workers at Evwreni, East-West Road, and other hotspots as a show of force.
In addition, the police seized from the suspects a Mercedes Benz, an unregistered Toyota Venza, a cut-to-size gun made locally, a dagger, ten live rounds, and a Toyota Venza that was thought to have been stolen.
A Peugeot car with the registration number KJA 98 GE, nine cups of Loud, codeine syrup, sachets of Swinol, 20 capsules of Tramadol, and 31 wraps of weed suspected to be cannabis were also recovered from the suspects.
DSP Bright Edafe, the Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, confirmed the report in a statement signed and made available to journalists.
He said: “The 94 commercial sex workers have been charged in court alongside some of the male suspects, while others have been transferred to the command headquarters for further investigation.”
According to Edafe, the arrests were made by the Delta State Police Command’s Operations Department, SIB, Dragon Patrol, Safer Highway Patrol, Raiders, CP D-Coy Squad, and the Rapid Response Squad, RRS.
Some of the suspects, he affirmed, were arrested based on credible intelligence reports after the raids of identified criminal rendezvous across Ughelli North Local Government Area.
