Afe Babalola (SAN), the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has urged President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek debt forgiveness for the country when he takes office.
Babalola advised Tinubu to follow in the footsteps of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who spent the first two to three years of his presidency begging for debt forgiveness for the country.
He contended that the Nigerian naira is worthless and that seeking investors would be a waste of time.
Babalola made the announcement over the weekend while fielding questions from journalists following a lecture titled “Smart Infrastructure: Catalyst for Sustainable Development” given by Prof Bamidele Adebisi of the University of Manchester at the university’s Alfa Belgore Hall.
The educationist, who described Nigeria as the worst debtor today, said;
We owe trillions of dollars and we are still borrowing more even as the present administration has few days to go.
We learnt that the in-coming president has gone to look for those who will invest here. Our naira is worthless, seek for debt forgiveness.
Prof. Adebisi, whose lecture was on smart infrastructure, said technology has come to stay.
He said;
We can use technology as a tool for societal development.
