Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain has sent a message of support to Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior after the Brazilian international was subjected to racism by La Liga supporters.
The incident happened during Sunday’s 1-0 La Liga loss to Valencia for Real Madrid.
During Real Madrid’s loss to Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium, Vinicius was the target of racial slurs and insults from the crowd.
The second-half play was stopped for a few minutes as officials from the stadium begged for the racist chants to stop after referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea informed them of the group of fans who were responsible.
According to Scroll, the referee reported that a spectator yelled “monkey, monkey” at Vinicius in his post-match report.
Vinicius was dismissed for elbowing Valencia attacker Hugo Duro in the face following a VAR review, which brought the situation to a head in the final seconds of the second half.
This only occurred after Valencia players got in Vinicius’ face and Duro put him in a headlock. The latter was not punished for his actions.
However, Vinicius posted a long message following the game on Instagram, claiming that racism in La Liga is the ‘norm.’
Reacting, Mbappe backed the 22-year-old attacker by posting an Instagram story that stated: “You’re not alone. We are with you & we support you.”
