Three police officers have been apprehended for allegedly assaulting civilians in Ekredjebor community in Ughelli North LGA, police in Delta state have said.
The spokesman of the command, DSP Bright Edafe, said the officers attacked the people with planks.
He stated that the state police command found the action condemnable and absolutely unacceptable.
He disclosed that the action of the officers was contained in a video that went viral, adding that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Wale Abass, had put in place internal disciplinary mechanisms to ensure that they were punished in line with extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act.
A source close to the command told City & Crime that the officers were in the community in response to a distress call to effect the arrest of suspected criminals.
He explained that as soon as the officers got to the community some youths attacked them with planks, but that the officers overpowered the youths and subsequently used the planks to beat them, and in the process recovered a pump action rifle from them.
