Locals in Kaduna State’s Birnin-Gwari town reported that terrorists fleeing neighbouring Zamfara State surrounded the town and abducted several residents.
The incident allegedly occurred on Thursday night in Birnin-Gwari’s Gobirawa area, near the NTA Birnin-Gwari. The location is less than 500 metres from an Air Force base.
Abdullahi Ibrahim Muhammad Amir, chairman of the Birnin-Gwari Local Government Council, issued a warning to residents of the area to limit their movements within the entire Birnin-Gwari Emirate.
The warning was issued following a meeting with the Emirate Council and local security agencies. Starting at 8:30 p.m., all forms of movement, whether on foot, bike, or vehicle, were prohibited in the emirate, according to the chairman.
Danmasanin Birnin-Gwari and former Managing Director of the Kaduna State Media Corporation, Alhaji Zubair Abdurra’uf, who spoke to journalists on Friday evening, said that “when I said early this month that terrorists were closing in, on Birnin-Gwari, many people did not believe me.”
Abdurra’uf expressed his dismay that the terrorists had the audacity to enter the main town of Birnin-Gwari and carry out their evil acts.
He criticised the government for not addressing the issue of security in Birnin-Gwari and suggested that a security summit be held in the area.
He also noted that the terrorists had taken over most of the farmlands in the central part of Birnin-Gwari, making it impossible for people to farm.
Despite this, he expressed hope that the government would take action to enable the people of Birnin-Gwari to conduct their activities peacefully.
He said that the Local Government Council had imposed a curfew on Birnin-Gwari as a drastic measure.
