Two senior senators have reportedly defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and are set to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming days.
WITHIN NIGERIA reports that Senators Mathew Urhogide and Ayo Akinyelure dumped the party, 48 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.
In the red chamber, Senator Urhogide represents Edo South Senatorial District, while Senator Akinyelure represents Ondo Central Senatorial District.
Their resignations were announced in two separate letters to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, which were read aloud during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Senator Urhogide stated in his letter that his decision to resign was motivated by the PDP’s inability to reconcile the power struggle within the party, whereas Akinyelure stated in his letter that his resignation was motivated by the PDP’s internal crisis.
