Sevilla of Spain defeated Jose Mourinho’s Roma in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
Jose Mourinho and Sevilla had never lost a European final before the Europa League final, which took place at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.
Sevilla is the most successful Europa League club, having won the competition a record six times prior to tonight’s final. As a result of tonight’s penalty shootout victory, Sevilla now has seven Europa League trophies to their name.
Interestingly, it appeared that Roma gave the trophy to Sevilla because the Italian team started stronger than the Spanish team.
Roma took the lead in the 34th minute thanks to Paulo Dybala. Fans expected a typical Jose Mourinho team to lock down the defense at that point. That, however, was not the case. Roma, on the other hand, took a slim lead into the second half.
The worst happened in the second half when Roma’s Gianluca Mancini scored an own goal in the 55th minute to bring Sevilla back into the game.
The game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes of regular time and 30 minutes of extra time. As a result, the tie had to be decided by penalties.
Mancini missed his penalty kick, and Roger Ibaez also missed his, as Sevilla defeated Roma 4-1 on penalties.
