Chris Smalling, an AS Roma defender, has revealed what manager Jose Mourinho told his players after their Europa League final loss to Sevilla.
After a 1-1 draw in Hungary on Wednesday, Roma was defeated in a penalty shootout by Sevilla.
Smalling stated during his post-match press conference that Mourinho was very proud of the Roma players and told them to stay strong after losing the Europa League final to Sevilla.
Smalling said: “It’s a big disappointment. It’s hard to lose on penalties, which are a lottery. We were determined to win, and we left everything on the pitch.
“There is sadness and disappointment in everyone because we fought hard to get to the final. Seeing others celebrate will stay with us for a long time. We have to try to have another chance next season.”
The former Manchester United star added, “Mourinho was very proud of us at the end of the game. He said we have always been together and we must be strong because we win and lose together.”
