The Trademore Estate, which is situated alongside the Lugbe-Airport Motorway, has been designated a disaster area by the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
Olusade Adesola, the FCTA’s Permanent Secretary, announced a tour of the estate that was devastated by flooding last Friday.
This was said in a statement released on Tuesday and signed by Nkechi Isa, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s director of public affairs.
After hours of persistent rain on last Friday morning, there was an unpleasant flooding event at Phase 2 of the well-known estate, which prompted the inspection.
The Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Abbas Idriss said, the decision followed the “consistent and persistent” threat to life from flooding at the Estate while adding that the FCT Administration places a high premium on lives and properties of residents of the Estate.
“It is expected that whoever resides in the estate should relocate to a safer place. The Federal Capital Territory Administration has placed a high premium on the lives and properties of the residents of the Estate, hence the reason for declaring the Estate a Disaster Zone”, Idriss said.
Dr. Idriss urged residents of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to follow early warnings and avoid actions that could lead to flooding.
The Executive Secretary, Director General of FEMA, FCT Commissioner of Police, Nigerian Security & Civil Defence Corps, Department of Development Control, and other heads were on the Permanent Secretary’s entourage.
Recall that the flood which occurred on Friday the 23rd of June had submerged a total of 116 houses, according to a statement by FEMA.
An eyewitness, Segun Akin, had also blamed the government for the recurring flood in the estate while calling for a holistic solution to the issue.
Recall also that the FEMA boss, while stating that the estate was sitting on a waterway, had said that the government would rather “clear that estate”, than than lose one life.
