Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has urged parliaments around the world to step up climate action as the world observes the International Day of Parliamentarism.
According to Abbas, the International Day of Parliamentarism, which commemorates the anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is a day for reflection among parliaments all over the world.
He stated that the 2023 theme, ‘Parliaments for the Planet,’ which focuses on climate action, was appropriate given the world’s struggle with climate change.
According to Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the Nigerian Parliament, which is a member of the IPU, will continue to work with other parliaments around the world to address the issue of climate change through legislation.
He stated that the Nigerian parliament had played an important role in addressing climate change issues over the years and that this would continue in the future.
Climate change, according to Speaker Abbas, is a major threat to humanity, necessitating concerted action to combat it.
The theme for this year’s International Day of Parliamentarism, ‘Parliaments for the Planet,’ according to the United Nations, is intended to mobilise parliaments and parliamentarians to act on the climate emergency.
