John Shedrack, 26, was given a three-month prison term on Wednesday by an Area Court in Jos, the capital of the Plateau State, for stealing 100 chickens worth N300,000.
The defendant entered a plea of guilty to the crime and asked the court for forgiveness before the judge, Shawomi Bokkos, handed down the punishment.
Bokkos granted the offender the choice of a N20,000 fine or three months in jail, and demanded that they pay the complainant N300,000 in restitution or face six months in jail if they didn’t.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp Monday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported at the Rantya Police Station on June 19 by Mr Ikechukwu Egwuonwu.
He said the accused person trespassed into the complainant’s poultry farm and stole his chickens.
The prosecutor further told the court that during the police investigation, the accused confessed to having committed the offence.
The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
