- IPOB announces a two-week sit-at-home protest in the South East region
- The protest is a response to Biafran people’s demand for increased civil disobedience
- It coincides with the planned meeting between Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Southeast leaders with President Tinubu
In response to the scheduled meeting between Ohanaeze Ndigbo and other Southeast leaders with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the security crisis in the region, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a two-week sit-at-home protest in the South East.
Simon Ekpa, the factional leader of IPOB, conveyed this announcement through a tweet on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. The sit-at-home protest is scheduled to commence from July 31, 2023, until August 14, 2023. It is a direct response to the Biafran people’s demand for heightened civil disobedience.
“Following the demand by the Biafra people for more sit at home civil disobedience, the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE) and Biafra De Facto Government In Homeland wish to notify Biafrans that there will be a sit-at-home civil disobedience starting from 31 July, 2023 to 14 August, 2023,” Ekpa said.
The primary objectives of this sit-at-home protest are to demand the immediate and unconditional release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently unlawfully detained at the DSS dungeon. Additionally, it aims to prepare for Biafra’s self-referendum and raise global awareness that Biafrans are taking charge of their own future.
The sit-at-home protest will follow this schedule: there will be a total lockdown in Biafraland from Monday, July 31, 2023, to Friday, August 4, 2023. However, on Saturday, August 6, and Sunday, August 7, 2023, the protest will go on a brief hiatus, and all Biafran markets will be operational.
From Monday, August 7, to Friday, August 11, 2023, there will be another complete lockdown in Biafraland. Subsequently, on Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13, 2023, all Biafran markets will reopen. The sit-at-home protest will conclude with a final lockdown in Biafraland on Monday, August 14.
Ekpa urged all market leaders to strictly adhere to this order and treat it with the utmost seriousness. Furthermore, he called upon all oil companies operating in Biafran territory to suspend oil exploration during these dates to avoid provoking the wrath of the Biafran people, which could result in severe consequences.
