- The confirmation followed the screening by the Committee
- The senators also deliberated with the nominees on security issues
Nigeria’s new Service Chiefs have been confirmed by the country’s upper legislative chamber, the senate.
The confirmation on Thursday followed the transmission of the Service Chiefs appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for legislative action to the Nigerian Senate.
The confirmation followed the screening by the Committee which was presided over by the Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabío.
Earlier in the day after their arrival, the nominees were subjected to the Chamber’s protocol where they were asked to introduce themselves.
The Senators went into a closed doors after their introduction at about 11:00 am to deliberate security issues with the nominees.
After three hours of the meeting, the Senate reopened Chambers for debate at about 3.00 pm to have the confirmation done.
The Service Chiefs who were confirmed through voice votes are: Major General Christopher G Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, Major General T.A Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal H. B. Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff.
Recall that Tinubu had in June 19 appointed the service Chiefs after sacking the previous ones.
Their appointment was contained in a statement released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and made accessible by Mr. Willie Bassey, the office’s director of information.
The President also approved the appointment of DIG Kayode Egbetokun as Acting Inspector-General of Police and Adeniyi Bashir Adewale as Acting Comptroller General of Customs.
However, since the appointment of the new service chiefs insecurity in the country has continued unabated.
After their appointment, hundreds of persons have been killed in the middlebelt, especially Plateau and Benue state, while a splinter group of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, has continued to wreak havoc in the south east.
