- Maguire said he will support the next captain
- He said losing the captaincy is ‘extremely’ disappointing
Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, has lost the club’s captain armband.
Maguire fell down the pecking order of defenders at Manchester United last season with the club’s manager, Erik Ten Hag, favouring Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and even Luke Shaw for defensive duties.
His lack of game time and poor run of form saw Bruno Fernandes captain the outfit for much of the campaign.
After a tumultuous season, the 30-year-old looks to be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer but he announced last week that he would continue to ply his trade with the red devils and that he was ready to fight for his place in the team.
However, Maguire, who joined Manchester United for a world record fee for a defender in 2019, on Sunday announced that he’s been ousted as the club’s captain.
The England international took to Twitter on Sunday to announce the development, adding that he was extreme disappointment.
He thanked the club’s fans and promised to support the next skipper.
“After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain,” he wrote.
“He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.
“So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.
“Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It’s one of the greatest honours in club football.
“I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field. I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support.”
