- Investigation into the gruesome killing had been launched

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the killing of one Mr Nelson Sylvester, a councilor representing Eha-Ulo ward, in Nsukka Local Government Area Legislative Council, Enugu State.
Sylvester, who was popularly known as Ofunwa, was shot dead on Sunday night by gunmen at his residence in the Eha-Alumonah community.
The police public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the incident.
Ndukwe, who said an investigation into the gruesome killing had been launched.
Subsequently, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed that one of the gunmen has been arrested.
In statement made available on Monday, Ndukwe said, “operatives of the Command have arrested one (1) male suspect and a member of the criminal gang, alleged to have attacked and murdered one Duhu Nelson Sylvester Nnacheta (a.k.a “Ofunwa”) “m”, identified as the Councilor representing Eha-Ulo Ehalumona Council Ward, on 16/07/2023 at about 11.30pm, at Umualoji Village in Ehalumona community of Nsukka LGA.
“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has ordered an intense discreet investigation and manhunt of the assailants.
“Further development shall be communicated in due course.”
WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that the gunmen stormed the lawmaker’s house and started raining bullets on him.
A community source revealed that the Councilor ran into a neighbouring compound during the attack but sustained bullet wounds and he died there.
“After the attack, residents searched for him at his house but could not find him. We felt he had escaped but unfortunately, we saw his lifeless body in the backyard of a neighbouring compound.
“The killing is one too many. it is heartbreaking; it is too hard for us to swallow. We are in deep agony,” the source said.
The development has sparked tension in the town and other neighbouring communities as nobody could figure out the reason behind his assassination.
