The Kano State Government has declared Wednesday, July 19, work-free to mark the beginning of the 1445 Islamic (Hijrah) New Year.
This was contained in a statement issued by Baba Dantiye, the Commissioner for Information, on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday, NAN reports.
The governor, who congratulated Muslims globally on the new Islamic year, charged civil servants and other people in Kano to pray for peace and tranquillity as well as the economic development of the state and Nigeria at large.
Yusuf also called on the people to live their lives based on the teachings of Islam.
He urged them to practise the virtues of kindness, love, and tolerance as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
Similarly, the Osun State Government has declared tomorrow, Wednesday, as public holiday to mark the beginning of 1445 Hijrah calendar.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Regional Integration and Special Duties, Mr Mudashiru Oyedeji on Tuesday, the Governor said the holiday is to allow Muslims celebrate the new year.
It added that the Governor would preside over a special match parade among the Muslim ummah at the stadium on Saturday to commemorate the new year.
“In commemoration of Hijrah 1445 AH Islamic New Year for all Muslims, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke declared tomorrow, Wednesday, as a public holiday throughout the state.
“While congratulating and wishing the entire Muslim ummah a happy celebration of the new Islamic calendar, the Governor will preside over a special match pass on Saturday at Osogbo township stadium by taking a symbolic salute as part of series of activities lined up to mark the new Islamic year”, it reads.
Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke will on Wednesday (tomorrow), swear in his newly appointed commissioners.
Recall that the governor had earlier unveiled his commissioner-nominees through the State House of Assembly.
The Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, read the names as contained in the letter sent to the lawmakers by Adeleke at the plenary on July 7.
According to the list, the Chief of Staff to Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun State, Festus Adeyemo, and two commissioners that served in the state cabinet during the tenure of ex-governor, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside 22 others were unveiled.
The two members of Aregbesola’s cabinet that made the list are Kolapo Alimi, who served as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Mr. Biyi Odunlade, who was Special Adviser and later commissioner for Sports.
Adeyemo, who is from Irewole Local Government Area, served as Chief of Staff to Oyinlola at the twilight of his administration, when the man that occupied the post in 2003, Dr Peter Babalola, left the cabinet in pursuit of governorship ambition.
Also listed is the widow of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, the elder brother of the incumbent governor, Mrs Folashade Adeleke.
