Yakubu Maikasuwa (SAN), President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has urged lawyers to equip themselves with the necessary skills to be globally competitive as the legal sector suffers from insecurity.
While noting that the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCTA) has provided opportunities for lawyers in the country, he stated that the era of freely travelling around Nigeria for law practice has passed due to insecurity.
He addressed a two-day annual conference of the NBA Section on Legal Practise (NBA-SLP) in Abuja, with the theme ‘Legal Practise Without Borders.’
The legal space has so shrunken to a point that you can’t even go to Kaduna the way we used to do, he said.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has urged jurists and legal professionals to brace themselves for the country’s continued degeneration.
Ariwoola, who was represented by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Salisu Garba, accused lawyers of lacking honesty, transparency, and integrity.
Earlier, Afam Okeke, Esq, chairman of the NBA, Abuja Branch, stated that the theme spoke to “the ever-dynamic landscape of legal practise and serves as a wake-up call for us to capitalise on the opportunities and innovations that we require to define our niche and develop a borderless practise.”
