- Outage reports have flooded Downdetector globally
- Meta working to restore connectivity
WhatsApp, the Meta-owned ubiquitous messaging app used by over 2 billion users, appears to be facing a worldwide outage. Tens of thousands of users are reporting issues sending and receiving messages on the social app.
The Meta-owned app was down worldwide, impacting users’ ability to communicate with friends and loved ones.
There were several incidents of people reporting issues with the messaging service, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources including user-submitted errors on its platform.
Over 150,000 WhatsApp outage reports have flooded Downdetector globally.
The majority of issues reported involve sending messages in the app.
Over 22,000 reports are circulating Downdetector in the US, and over 137,000 users have reported issues in the UK.
In Nigeria, the App went down around 9pm.
In a statement, WhatsApp said: “we’re working quickly to resolve connectivity issues with WhatsApp and we’ll update you here as soon as possible.”
Multiple WhatsApp users have flooded the company’s recent post regarding the outage and have urged them to fix the problem quickly.
WhatsApp is part of Meta’s entourage of platforms, which includes Facebook, Instagram and the newcomer, Threads.
However, WhatsApp is designed solely for communication – and many users are now left in the dark.
Users said they are having issues sending messages, while others experiencing problems with the app said the website is not working.
However, the UK side of DownDetector shows more than 157,000 issue reports.
Of these reports, 63 percent say they are having issues sending messages, 22 percent are experiencing problems with the app, and 15 percent cannot receive messages.
WhatsApp has an estimated monthly active user base of 2.7 billion people, but it is not clear how many have been impacted by the outage.
Meanwhile, it appears the service is working again for some.
