One person was reportedly killed in Kankia town, the headquarters of Katsina state’s Kankia local government area.
Around 9 p.m. Saturday, suspected bandits attacked a residential area opposite General Hospital in Kankia, where the victim was said to have visited his brother.
The deceased, identified as Ibrahim Abdullahi (Baraya), was said to have been shot in the groyne while standing in the front yard of his brother’s house, unaware that the attackers were nearby.
“We were going about our normal business when he heard a gunshot around 8:30pm,” said a relative of the deceased, who simply identified himself as Muhammed. We attempted to flee for our lives, but then we realised it could be security.
Later I discovered that it was Ibrahim Abdullahi, a relative of my wife that was killed. He was taken to the nearby hospital and as we speak his corpse is still there.
Muhammed went on to say that the attackers had previously kidnapped a young boy in the area, but that following the shooting, they released the boy and fled the scene.
Kankia, despite not being a frontline local government area in Katsina state, has had pockets of banditry attacks in the past.
As of the time of filing this report, Katsina police spokesman ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu could not be reached for comment.
