- Tinubu is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government
- Nigeria is also in the process of fully re-opening its borders with Benin Republic
At the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu is currently hosting Patrice Talon, his counterpart from the Benin Republic.
The presidents of West Africa will meet at a time when the Niger Republic, with which both nations share a northern border, is showing troubling symptoms of political unrest.
Tinubu is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and has, in that capacity, already condemned the developments in Nigeria’s northern neighbours where soldiers were said to have barricaded President Mohamed Bazoum inside the presidential palace in the country’s capital, Niamey.
“I am in close consultation with other leaders in our region, and we shall protect our hard-earned democracy in line with the universally acceptable principle of constitutionalism,” Tinubu had said in a statement personally issued by him.
Apart from the situation in Niger, Nigeria is also in the process of fully re-opening its borders with Benin Republic.
Both issues may feature in the meeting today.
More details to come later….
