30-year-old man commits suicide over N250,000 debt in Niger state

One Saifullahi Salisu has committed suicide over his inability to offset a debt of N250,000 he owed people in his locality.

Salisu hailed from Shata, Maikunkele, in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, where the incident happened.

The deceased hanged himself on Monday, it was gathered, throwing residents of the area into agony and confusion.

Some residents of Shata told newsmen that Salisu’s body was found hanging from a rope in his bedroom by his neighbours on Monday.

His body, according to them, had been buried. He was described as a diligent youth with potential.

His girlfriend, identified as Rebecca Musa, stated that the deceased had informed her, when she noticed he was disturbed, that he was owing some people in the area the sum of N250,000.

According to her: “He told me that those he owed have started demanding their money, and he couldn’t pay back. He told me that the issue was disturbing him, and he didn’t know how he was going to settle the debts. I didn’t know it would result in him killing himself over it.”

The Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development.

However, he said the corpse was removed and taken to the General Hospital’s morgue before it was released to the family.

He further affirmed that an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
