Arising from harsh economic situation precipitated by fuel subsidy removal, Enugu local governments councilors have appealed to the state government to improve on their security and welfare packages.
In a press release on Tuesday, July 25 at Okpara Square Enugu during candle light procession in honour of their murdered colleague, Hon. Sylvester Ofunwa, and made available to WITHIN NIGERIA, the councilors under the aegis of The Forum of 260 Ward Councilors, Enugu state expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the state.
According to them, the decision of the state governor, Barr. Peter Mbah to end unlawful sit-at-home order in the state is a welcome development.
“Good afternoon Gentlemen of the press. You are welcome to the press conference organized by the 260 ward councilors, Enugu state.
“We gathered today, to mourn the gruesome killing of an honorable councilor last week. His name is Hon. Sylvester Ofunwa, he was the Councilor representing Eha Ulo Ward in Nsukka LGA. Hon. Sylvester until his death was a great crusader for justice and community development.
“The 260 ward Councilors also pray for His Excellency, Barr Peter Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu state. We are praying for the success of his administration especially in the area of security.
“We commend the state Government efforts in ending the menace of sit at Home in the state. We pledge our support in mobilizing our wards to key into this fight, aimed at restoring the economy of our state.
“The Forum of Enugu state Councilors are begging for improved welfare for councilors especially in the hard economy. Monthly take home and allowances of Councilors does not reflect the present situation of the country. The burden of the ward falls on us with our meager salary.
“We commend the Commissioner of police and all the security agencies in the state for their speedy response in investigating the murder case of one of us and equally implore them to speedy action to bring the perpetrators to book.
“Finally, we call on the Commissioner of police to beef up security in our various wards.
