Following their victory over co-hosts Australia on Thursday, Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, charged the Super Falcons to go on and win the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
On Thursday, the Falcons defeated a tenacious Australian side 3-2 at Brisbane Stadium, their first victory at the soccer festival.
Emily van Egmond opened the scoring for Australia in the first minute of added time of the first half, while Uchenna Kanu equalized for Nigeria six minutes later.
Later, Nigeria took the lead through Osinachi Ohale (65 minutes) and Asisat Oshoala (72 minutes), while Alanna Kennedy scored Australia’s second goal in added time.
The First Lady, who was watching the game from her Abuja residence, said the team did Nigeria proud and urged them to go all the way and win the cup for Africa.
She stated that doing so would be an honour for Nigeria.
I am so delighted and I pray, by the grace of God, for them to bring the cup home.
I am proud of them and like I promised, I will be waiting to receive them, Mrs Tinubu said.
The First Lady had hosted the girls on July 1, through Dr Betta Edu, the APC National Women Leader, before their departure for Australia.
Oshoala makes history as Super Falcons edge out Australia
Asisat Oshoala made history on Thursday after the Super Falcons defeated the host nation, Australia, in the ongoing FIFA Women’s world cup.
She made history after becoming the first player to score in three consecutive World Cups.
Oshoala scored in the 3-2 victory against The Matildas after coming on as a substitute.
The Barcelona Femeni forward was introduced in the 64th minute after passing a late fitness test.
