- The development is coming amid widespread suffering and hardship occasioned by galloping inflation and subsidy removal from petrol
- Governor Fintiri has declared curfew
Residents of Adamawa state on Sunday stormed warehouses in the North East state and made away with hundreds of sacks of grain.
The development is coming amid widespread suffering and hardship occasioned by galloping inflation and subsidy removal from petrol which have sent the prices of food, transport and other essential commodities through the roof.
In a viral video of the invasion of the warehouses, which are said to be owned by government, on Sunday, hundreds of locals were seen fleeing the scene of the pandemonium with their loots balanced on their heads or clutched tightly to their chests.
To bring the situation under control and restore normalcy, the state governor, Mr. Ahmadu Fintiri, has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state.
The governor announced the decision on Sunday via his verified Twitter handle.
The governor explained that the action became necessary in order to protect businesses in the state and maintain law and order. “Effective immediately on Sunday, July 30, 2023, I, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, have declared a 24-hour curfew in Adamawa State due to escalating violence by hoodlums attacking people and businesses. No movement is allowed, except for essential duties with a valid ID. Your safety is our priority – please comply for the well-being of all”. The governor echoed.

Meanwhile, Netizens on Twitter have continued to react to the development. “People are hungry; you are locking them up for going to government-owned stores to pick what belongs to them? Why didn’t you share those grains? What are they doing in stores when your people are hungry? Kanajin tsoron Allah kuwa? “@AbRaheemmuhd tweeted.
Another Netizen, however flayed the governor for his handling the situation and called for concerted efforts to end the menace. “It is shameful that your citizens are hungry and you lock up food items in storage. Declaration of 24 hour curfew still shows lack of understanding of the situation. You should be addressing them and assuring them that your government will respond to their need. It is your duty”. @NDrAgwoTurumbe tweeted.
