Budapest 2023: AFN awaiting Amusan’s AIU clearance

Her participation is still subject to clearance by the AIU.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria said it is still awaiting the Athletics Integrity Unit’s decision on Tobi Amusan’s participation in the 2023 World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.

With one week until the championships, Amusan’s prospects of defending the crown she earned in Oregon last year are in jeopardy after the AIU suspended her last month for failing three whereabouts checks.

In the entry list published by World Athletics, the women’s 100m hurdles world record holder was listed among Team Nigeria’s athletes, but her participation is still subject to clearance by the AIU.

The AFN also released the list of athletes that would represent the country at the championships last Tuesday, with the world champion and record holder excluded, although her name was on the entry list sent to the World Athletics by the AFN.

Technical Director of the AFN, Samuel Onikeku, said that that the entry was still pending AIU’s clearance.

The condition that the World Athletics put in front of her name says ‘pending AIU process’, so we are still waiting for it. But I’m sure we will have it before the start of the games, Onikeku said.

Last year, Amusan and long jumper Ese Brume were Nigeria’s lone medalists at the championships.

She set a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals before running 12.06 seconds in the final to win gold and become Nigeria’s first world champion and record holder in athletics, while Brume took silver in the women’s long jump.
