Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, warmly welcomed Super Falcons’ talents Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Gift Monday to his residence in Marina on Tuesday.
Utilizing his Instagram page, Sanwo-Olu shared snapshots from the meeting, expressing gratitude to the Falcons for their impressive performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. He assured continued support and encouragement for the players on behalf of the nation.
He captioned the photos, “The Super Falcons’ incredible run at the FIFA Women’s World Cup has ignited a new era of enthusiasm for women’s football in Nigeria.
“Their achievements on the field and the unity they brought to our nation are truly remarkable. We will continue to empower and encourage our female athletes and also work towards a brighter future for women’s football in Nigeria.
“A big thank you to these amazing ladies for their visit, and the gifts of the club’s jerseys.”
Recall that WithinNigeria had reported that England kicked out Nigeria from the Women’s World Cup. England secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup by triumphing over Nigeria in a penalty shootout, even in the face of a red card given to Lauren James during regular play.
Chloe Kelly’s successful penalty proved decisive for England, who are now set to confront either Colombia or Jamaica in the upcoming quarter-final clash.
Lauren James was shown a red card due to violent conduct, leaving England at a significant disadvantage heading into extra time. With 87 minutes on the clock, James, a standout performer in the group stage, intentionally stepped on Michelle Alozie. Initially, a yellow card was issued by the referee, but after VAR consultation, Melissa Borjas brandished a red card.
Even before the dismissal, Nigeria exhibited superior performance, striking the crossbar twice through Ashleigh Plumptre and Uchenna Kanu. Meanwhile, England’s best chance came from Rachel Daly, whose close-range header was thwarted by a splendid save from Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Earlier in the game, England’s Daly believed she had earned a penalty when Borjas signaled for a spot-kick following a challenge by Rasheedat Ajibade. However, upon video review, the Honduran referee determined no foul had occurred.
