- Spain defeated England 1-0 in the Women’s World Cup final with Olga Carmona’s first-half goal securing victory
- Despite England’s efforts, including a penalty save, Spain claimed the title, becoming the fifth nation to win the Women’s World Cup
England fell to Spain 1-0 in their first Women’s World Cup final, as Olga Carmona’s first-half goal was enough to break the Lionesses’ hearts.
Sarina Wiegman and her team were hoping to bring the game’s biggest prize home from Sydney, but Carmona drilled a finish into the far corner in 29 minutes.
Despite Mary Earps’ brilliant save of Jennifer Hermoso’s penalty with 20 minutes remaining, England could not equalize.
It was the first time England’s men’s or women’s teams had reached a World Cup final since 1966, and the country came to a halt for the historic occasion, which was briefly interrupted by an anti-Putin protester invading the pitch in the first half, but were left bereft as Spain won.
Lauren Hemp came closest to scoring for the Lionesses when her curling effort hit the crossbar in the 16th minute, but Spain were well worth the win, becoming only the fifth nation to win the Women’s World Cup, following the United States (4), Germany (2), Norway (1), and Japan (1).
FIFA WWC: Sweden beat Australia to claim bronze medal
Kosovare Asllani’s stunning second-half strike sealed victory for Sweden as they beat co-hosts Australia, to finish third at the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup.
She rifled in a shot from the edge of the area to add to Fridolina Rolfo’s first-half penalty as Sweden won the bronze medal match for the second World Cup in succession.
Despite the defeat, this represents co-hosts Australia’s best-ever World Cup finish as their efforts in the tournament have captured the hearts of the fans in green and gold, but the Matildas were unable to end on a high.
Rolfo’s penalty gave Peter Gerhardsson’s side the lead after a video assistant referee (VAR) check confirmed that Claire Hunt had clipped Stina Blackstenius in the box after 26 minutes.
