A 24-year-old woman has been apprehended on suspicion of using insecticide to cause the death of a four-day-old baby belonging to her co-wife.

The Bauchi State Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, conveyed this information in a statement titled “Stepmother, 24, Allegedly Murders Newborn in Ningi LGA.” The statement was released to the press in the state on Tuesday.

The tragic incident reportedly unfolded in Bantu Village, situated within the Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Ahmed Wakil, who holds the rank of Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the baby was born on August 15, 2023. Regrettably, the suspect is alleged to have taken the infant’s life on August 19, 2023, just prior to the planned naming ceremony.

“The incident was reported to the Ningi divisional police headquarters on the 19th of August, 2023 which revealed that the four-day-old baby was born on the 15th of August, 2023 and was murdered by the suspect, Furera Abubakar, on the 19th of August, 2023 before the naming ceremony.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a co-wife to the nursing mother (victim’s mother).

“The suspect entered the co-wife’s room with insecticide liquid (Gramalin) and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord.
