Plans are underway to upgrade the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, Zamfara State, to a University Teaching Hospital for the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS).
This was disclosed to newsmen in Gusau, the state capital, by the medical director of the medical centre, Dr Bello Mohammed, while addressing journalists in his office.
According to Dr Mohammed, a bill on transforming the medical centre into a university teaching hospital has already passed the first and second readings at the National Assembly and is presently awaiting the third reading.
Mohammed noted that when the hospital has been upgraded, it will focus more on training manpower and providing practical knowledge to medical students at the Federal University, Gusau.
The medical centre, he further stated, is strategic to the well-being of the people of the state as it attends swiftly to victims of banditry, some of whom cannot afford to foot their medical bills but are nevertheless treated free by the centre.
