- The committee chairman, Obinna Aguocha, emphasized the release of the IPOB leader as a potential solution for peace in the Southeast during a recent sitting
- Aguocha stated that government must look at the root cause of the problem in the southeast in order to end the insecurity in the region
In order to reduce unrest in the Southeast, an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives has urged for Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group that is prohibited, to be released immediately and without conditions.
In order to decrease kidnapping, murders, and banditry in and around Abia State’s Isiukwuato and Umunnochi local government areas, a committee was formed to work with security forces.
The release of the IPOB leader is one of the solutions for Southeast Asian peace, according to the committee’s chairman, Obinna Aguocha, during the meeting on Thursday.
To end the insecurity in the southeast, according to Aguocha, the government needs to examine the underlying causes of the issue.
He said the path to security will start with “government’s recognition of the rule of law, justice, and equitable inclusion of the Southeast zone in Project Nigeria and the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from unlawful detention to ensure lasting peace and security in the entire region.”
Following his presentation, the committee went into a closed-door session with Abia State Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie.
