The military junta in Gabon has dissolved all institutions of democracy in the country following a coup in the early hours of Wednesday.
WITHIN NIGERIA had reported the military seizure of power in the Central Africa country after the democratic government of President Ali Bongo was overthrown.
In a televised address on Wednesday morning, the coup leaders announced the dissolution the Cabinet, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Elections Centre.
The junta said it represented all Security and Defence forces in the Central African nation under the aegis of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI).
The CTRI also announced the cancellation of the results of last Saturday’s presidential election, which Bongo was declared the winner.
Bongo has been in power since 2009, when he succeeded his father, Omar Bongo, who ruled Gabon for 42 years.
