- Ex-INEC Commissioner Jinadu urges Tinubu to implement Uwais report for better elections, citing recurring logistical issues and credibility concerns
- Jinadu suggests adopting strategic plan for electoral cycle, including overdue reforms recommended by Uwais Electoral Reform Committee
Prof. Adele Jinadu, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement the Justice Uwais report for improved electioneering in the country.
He announced yesterday in Abuja at the annual Prof. Abubakar Momoh Memorial Lecture, with the theme ‘The 2023 general election: Lessons learned in preparation for off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states.’
On August 28, 2007, late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua established a 22-member Electoral Review Committee, chaired by late Justice Lawal Uwais, to examine the electoral process and advise on reform areas critically.
The Uwais committee completed their assignment and submitted their report to the late president, but the federal government did not implement most of their recommendations.
However, Jinadu, also a governing council member, TEI, stated that the operational deployment of officials, materials, and logistics for the elections had remained a recurring problematic feature, undermining the electoral governance’s credibility.
The FG should adopt a strategic plan divided into short-to-medium term covering the 2023-2027 electoral cycle, to pursue, among other political reforms, outstanding electoral reforms recommended by the Uwais Electoral Reform Committee, Jinadu said.
