- The minister stated that the economy does not permit any commitment by the federal government at the moment
- However, records of the road projects done by the states will be kept and can be revisited in the future when the economy improves
Works Minister David Umahi has stated that the federal government is currently unable to reimburse states for the funds they have spent on federal roads. This announcement was made during Mr. Umahi’s visit to Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan on Thursday.
“The economy right now will not permit any commitment by the federal government. However, records of such road projects done by the states would be kept and could be revisited when the economy improves,” stated Mr Umahi.
The minister commended Mr Makinde for his administration’s intervention in road projects. He said the intervention was alleviating the suffering of people.
“Be it state or federal roads, we are one government. The aim and oath of office is to place the welfare of the people ahead of any other interest,” added Mr Umahi.
During his visit to Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan, Mr. Umahi encouraged him to consider using concrete pavement technology for road construction projects. He highlighted that this technology is more cost-effective and durable compared to asphalt roads.
Drawing from his experience as the former governor of Ebonyi state, Mr. Umahi mentioned that he successfully completed nearly 95% of road projects using concrete pavement. He also mentioned that road projects in Lagos using this technology have been successful.
Additionally, the Minister of Works mentioned that he is currently touring federal government road projects in the South-West region. He shared that he has already met with the contractors responsible for road projects in the North-West, North-Central, and South-West regions in Abuja.
“After the meeting, I decided to visit these projects to know the quality of work done and other things on the ground,” said Mr Umahi.
