On Thursday, Major-General Koko Isoni, the Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison (AHQ Gar), formally initiated the establishment of a general court martial.
This court martial is tasked with the trial of 12 officers and 15 soldiers who stand accused of violating various provisions outlined in the Armed Forces Act.
The court martial convened at the Scorpion Officer’s Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, in accordance with the authority vested in Major-General Isoni by Section 131 (2) (d) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A20 LFN, 2004.
This section grants him the power to oversee the trial of Nigerian Army personnel accused of diverse offenses.
In his inaugural address, the garrison commander reassured the accused individuals that the court would administer justice impartially.
Major-General Isoni emphasized that the court members are individuals of impeccable character and extensive experience, and he urged them to prioritize fairness over legal technicalities.
He also admonished those appearing before the court to avoid unnecessary delays, as prolonged trials not only deny justice but negate it entirely.
Major-General Isoni stressed that the court operates independently of his authority and encouraged it to fulfill its responsibilities without any bias or favoritism towards anyone.
