After travelling for medical treatment abroad, Ondo state governor Rotimi Akeredolu has returned to Nigeria.
On Thursday, the return of the Ondo governor was confirmed by a reliable source within the government.
The source, who requested anonymity, claimed that Governor Akeredolu had arrived in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and would be spending the night at his private residence to rest.
He stated that a few cabinet ministers are already en route to welcome him back to the nation.
“The governor (Akeredolu) is back in the country. We would be in Ibadan at his private residence to take some rest. I’m aware that some members of the state executive council would also visit him there and welcome him,” the source said.
Akeredolu’s wife, Betty Anyanwu, posted a photograph of her husband on social media, tagging it “homebound.”
Governor Akeredolu had left Nigeria for a 21-day leave and medical trip to attend to his health in Germany.
He announced his decision to embark on the medical trip on June 7 with the expectation to return on July 6, 2023, but his prolonged stay caused heavy controversy and political bickering in the state.
On July 15, the governor announced that his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, should take over the running of the state in “acting capacity” pending the time he would resume and be certified fit by his medical doctors.
