DSS arrests Deputy CBN Governor Aisha Ahmad over alleged fraud

The arrest is related to the alleged fraudulent acquisition of shares in Polaris Bank, Titan Bank/Union Bank

According to reports from Nigeria’s state television, NTA, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) responsible for Financial System Stability, Aisha Ahmad, has been arrested by the State Security Service (SSS).

Ms Ahmad was reportedly arrested over her “alleged fraudulent acquisition of shares in Polaris Bank, Titan Bank/Union Bank.”

“The CBN Deputy Governor is currently being interrogated on how $300 million to complete the acquisition of Union Bank was raised by Titan Bank,” NTA reported on its X handle.

Details of the arrest are still sketchy. Neither the CBN nor the SSS have spoken officially about the arrest which was first reported late Saturday.

Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele is still in DSS custody.

WITHIN NIGERIA reported that President Bola Tinubu had in July suspended Emefiele from his role at the apex bank and ordered him to handover the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the CBN governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
