PEPC Verdict Great Victory For Democracy – Osinbajo

The ruling was a huge victory for Nigeria's constitutional democracy and the rule of law

Yemi Osinbajo

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has congratulated President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s decision confirming the All Progressives Congress’ victory in the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

He said the ruling was a huge victory for Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and the rule of law.

He stated that the practice of democracy in our country had been strengthened further by the fact that all parties faithfully followed the legal electoral process and relied on courts in the event of a dispute.

He said;

Our nation now needs all of us to work together to address our challenges and to deliver the realisation of the incredible potentials.

Why Nigerians will no longer trust INEC – Osinbajo’s aide

Laolu Akande, former presidential spokesperson, says the February 25 presidential election has severely eroded the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He noted that the electoral umpire emerged from the controversial election as “damaged goods”.

He added that the electoral umpire broke its trust with the citizenry by not electronically transmitting the results of the presidential contest.

In the build-up to the election, Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, and other top officials of the commission assured Nigerians that the election results will be transmitted from the polling units to a live portal where people can view them in real-time.

He asserted that the commission had developed the requisite infrastructure to transmit election results electronically.

However, the commission failed to transmit the presidential election results electronically, citing technical glitches.

The development sparked uproar from opposition chieftains and citizens across the land.

It was also one of the grounds on which the election of President Bola Tinubu was challenged at the petition tribunal.
