To reduce boat mishaps, Taraba State’s Association of Inland Water Transporters has banned journeys and overloading at all of the state’s jetties.

Alhaji Jidda Mayoreneyo, the acting state chairman of the association, revealed this in an interview at Mayoreneyo on Wednesday.

He stated that overloading and night trips were major causes of boat mishaps and that if avoided, the number of boat accidents would be reduced.

He also stated that rescue operations when boats capsized in the middle of the night were difficult and resulted in more casualties.

He also revealed that the National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA) had provided the association with some life jackets for use by passengers.

He also stated that as part of their efforts to address boat mishaps, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA), and fire service had conducted enlightenment campaigns on safety measures for water transporters in three state zones.

CBN clears air on reports of naira redenomination

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reacted to reports that it’s planning to re-denominate the naira.

Messages circulating on social media and instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook claim that the CBN plans to introduce a new naira policy to see the naira being redenominated.

However, the apex bank said there was no iota of truth in the messages, describing it as fake.

It urged members of the public to disregard the message.

The CBN, in 2007, under the governorship of Professor Chukwuma Soludo, had broached the idea of re-denominating the naira. Still, the president at the time, Olusegun Obasanjo, kicked against the policy.

Currency redenomination is when a new money unit replaces the old unit with a certain ratio. It is achieved by removing zeros from a currency or moving some decimal points to the left to correct perceived misalignment in the currency and pricing structure, and enhance the credibility of the local currency.

Some online reports had claimed that the apex bank planned to redenominate the currency such that $1 will equal N1.25 by November 2023.
