The 24-hour curfew that was put in place by the Kano government to prevent any disruption of peace and order in the state has now been lifted.
The Kano police command had initially declared the curfew on Wednesday following a tribunal judgement that removed Abba Yusuf from his position as governor. The judgement, delivered through a Zoom session, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revoke Yusuf’s certificate of return.
The tribunal also affirmed Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful governor of the state.
Concerns arose after the verdict that there might be protests by supporters of the former governor across Kano. In response, the commissioner of police, Muhammad Gumel, deployed security personnel throughout the city to enforce the curfew.
However, on Thursday, Halilu Dantiye, the Kano commissioner for information, announced to reporters that the curfew has been lifted. This decision was made to allow residents to resume their normal activities.
