- The factories did not meet the minimum requirements necessary to operate
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down eight bakeries and seven sachet water factories in Bauchi State.
These facilities were found to be in violation of NAFDAC’s manufacturing and hygiene standards.
It was discovered that some of these factories, located in Bauchi and Katagum local government areas, were not registered with NAFDAC and did not meet the minimum requirements necessary to operate.
Josephine Dayilim, the NAFDAC coordinator in Bauchi State, informed journalists on Monday that the closure of these facilities took place on Friday.
“Some bakers use banned substances such as potassium bromate, which can cause kidney failure, loss of hearing and breakdown of vitamins incorporated in the flour used.
“Unregistered sachet water production could also be detrimental to health because some producers use poorly-treated water capable of causing diarrhoea and cholera,’’ she said.
Ms Dayilim said NAFDAC would continue to inspect relevant factories to ensure a healthy society and to create more awareness.
She advised manufacturers to always ensure compliance with hygiene and manufacturing guidelines and to ensure they register with NAFDAC.
“Those that refuse to register with NAFDAC could be producing unsafe, unwholesome and ineffective products which could be dangerous to the health of consumers,” she stated.
Ms Dayilim advised consumers to always check products’ registration numbers, expiry dates, batch numbers, and manufacturers’ addresses before consumption.
