- The APC claimed that Bello’s arrest revealed that numerous high-ranking PDP members were members of cult groups
- The PDP Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Bankole, swiftly criticized the ruling party as a hub of criminals and cultists
The Peoples Democratic Party, the state’s opposition party, has been labelled by the Ogun State All Progressives Congress as a “nest of cultists” that requires additional investigation by the security services in order to make more arrests and stop the spread of cultism in the state.
In a statement released on Sunday, the publicity secretary of the ruling party, Tunde Oladunjoye, praised the arrest of PDP legislator Damilare Bello, often known as Dre, in connection with the most recent cult-related violence in Sagamu.
The APC asserted that Bello’s detention proved numerous high-ranking PDP members belonged to cults.
“Part of the strategy of these top members/sponsors of the cults, especially in Sagamu, has been to travel out of the country when the planned clashes are being effected, and later return to claim alibi. It is a pattern that could easily be verified by the investigators,” Oladunjoye said.
But in a swift reaction, the PDP Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Bankole, described the ruling party as a hub of criminals and cultists.
The party said, “A quick reminder is also how the government and APC used thugs and cultists to beat members of the opposition on the first day of the Ogun governorship tribunal sitting.”
The PDP also accused the APC of using cultists to allegedly disrupt the March 18 governorship election in the state.
