Members and supporters of the Labour Party (LP) held a peaceful protest on Friday, demanding the replacement of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) before the Imo State governorship election in November.
The protesters displayed banners and placards while chanting songs at the entrance of the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The state LP Chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, informed journalists that the party is urging INEC to ensure the validity of their votes by utilizing the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine.
Among their demands is the removal of the REC in the state due to allegations of compromise.
In response, Emmanuela Opara, the Head of INEC’s Voter Education and Publicity Department, assured the protesters that the commission will remain impartial and resist any attempts to compromise the standards during the election.
