- Obi discussed his potential approach to resolving the looming strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’
- The proposed approach aims to eliminate the corruption and criminal aspects of the issue while addressing the excess demand.
Fuel subsidies have been compared to organised crime by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for the 2023 election.
When discussing the strategy he would have used differently to avert the impending strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, Obi made this statement on Monday on Arise TV’s “The Morning Show.”
Fuel subsidy is a form of organised crime. I emphasised this numerous times: get rid of it. In my opinion, the best course of action would have been to eliminate both the excessive demand and the corrupt and criminal aspects of the situation.
“By doing this, you would have reduced it by 50 per cent. The remaining 50 per cent is what we would have been able to, after consultation with various stakeholders in order to find a way in an organised manner, remove and show the proceed of the gains of the removal to be invested in critical development areas.”
The former Anambra State governor added that he felt positive about Nigeria’s future.
